Questions
Denner & Snacks
As you may remember, the first denner for this year will be Johnny. The denner position is to give the boys a chance at demonstrating some leadership. In the past, I've had them lead the cub scout promise and assign partners. Additionally, this year I would like to ask them to be responsible for bringing the snack. Each scout will be denner for one or two meetings.
Name That Scout
One of the games we are playing on Wednesdays meeting will be one to get to know each other. While most of the boys already know each other, I'd like to play a game where I read a fact about one of the scouts, and everyone has to guess who it applies to. To help me with that, could everyone provide me 3 or 4 facts about your son that other scouts may or may not know. For example, the school Jacob attended before ISB was Mercer Elementary, or he broke both legs when he was six (not really true).
Arrow of Light
While all the members of our Den have earned their Webelos badge, I'm trying to find out which additional Arrow of Light requirements are needed. I know what Johnny, Adam and Jacob have done already. I need to know what achievements the other scouts have earned so that we can plan what we can accomplish in the meetings, and if there is anything else required beyond that.
Thanks for your time and attention.

September Pack Meeting
It was great to see a good turnout for the pack meeting. David, Dieter and the leadership did a great job of entertaining the kids and hopefully informing the parents.
I took a few photos during the meeting and posted them on my Flickr account linked below.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/ebvimages/sets/72157624909225008/with/4971550460/
Johnny Peters will be our first denner this year. As David explained, the denner is a leadership opportunity for the scouts to help out with the meetings. My goal is to give every scout the chance to be a denner, so it may only be for a meeting or two.
I also want to welcome our Den Chief Sharwin van Hierden. As many of you probably know, Sharwin is a boy scout and the older brother of Rynel. We are really lucky to have Sharwin, as the purpose of the Webelos program is to transition the kids from cub scouts to boy scouts. Not only will he be a great source of information about the boy scouts, I think the boys will enjoy working with him.

Den Meeting Before Pack Meeting
Due to the fact that some of the boys have soccer assessments prior to the pack meeting on Wednesday, I am not planning having the abbreviated den meeting at 5:30.
If your scout does not have soccer assessment on Wednesday and can arrive ten or so minutes before 6:00, it would help as we are doing the opening flag ceremony.
We'll have our first meeting on September 15th at 3:45. I'll send out an email with some details in the next few days.

Den 5
Just wanted to welcome all the scouts and parents to Den 5, one of the Webelos II dens. Additionally, I would like to address:
1. Den Meetings
I would like to get together twice a month as a den, in addition to the pack functions. There will also be a few times when we will attend a Boy Scout meeting or function to help earn an achievement and to get the boys familiar with what will be coming next.
Last year we met on Wednesdays at 3:30 - 5:00 p.m. roughly every other week. I think I read that Ethan has swimming until 3:30, so would 3:45 to 5:00 (or maybe 5:15) on Wednesdays (roughly every other) work for everyone? My suggested schedule would be:
September 15th
September 29th
October 6th (on this meeting, if its more convenient, we could start later so the den meeting ends right before the pack meeting begins)
October 20th
November 10th
November 24th
December 8th
We may vary the meeting time or day if we have a parent who is helping with a particular activity and is unavailable in the day, but I'll give plenty of notice so that we can coordinate schedules. Also, we will occasionally meet with the other Webelos II den for fun activities.
2. Earning the Arrow of Light Award
As you may remember from our meeting, we put the experienced Webelos scouts in the same den because they all have their Webelos badge and we can work towards earning the coveted Arrow of Light award. There may be a few achievements that some scouts have completed and others have not, but we'll work that out soon.
The plan is to do most of the work at our meetings (or at Boy Scout meetings/outings), but there may be some things to do at home. In the next week, I hope to get out an email that lays out what each boy needs, and identify if there is anything that needs to be done at home.
3. Getting Started
One of the requirements for earning the Arrow of Light is to be an active den member for six months after ending the fourth grade. I'd like to get the clock rolling on that, so I'd ask that before the pack meeting, could each scout take a look at the Arrow of Light requirements on page 63 of their handbook? If you don't have your book or prefer to view online, here is a link:
http://usscouts.org/advance/cubscout/arrowoflight.asp.
4. Pack Meeting
The first pack meeting is on Wednesday, September 8th at 6:00 p.m. Could get there at 5:30 p.m. and have a quick get together meeting? We can cover a few preliminary items and go over what we need to do for the flag ceremony in the meeting.
5. Blog
I keep a blog for the den which I update occasionally. I will try to put any general emails about the den on the blog as well. The blog address is : http://pack701den5webelos.blogspot.com/

Last Meeting
We had our last den meeting of the year today. It was great that despite everything going on in the city, that all the scouts could make it.
My plan had been to go to the pool, then come back to the house for pizza, cake and ice cream. The boys decided that they would rather watch a movie than go swimming, so that's what we did.
I want to thank all the parents for helping out this year. The boys did a great job this year. Five of the boys earned their Webelos badge, and they all earned a pretty good number of pins. They couldn't have done it without your support.
A big thanks also to Diane for making a really great cub scout cake. Not only did it look really good, it tasted great as well.
Thanks again. Hopefully we'll see you Saturday for rocket day.

Update Part 2
Thanks to Dieter for pointing out a few things.
- The May den meeting will probably be moved, as we are scheduled to have a Pack meeting that night.
- For parents of Benjamin, John Gorman and Allen. My last email listed the things that needed to be done for the Webelos badge. Due to delays in receiving badges and pins (not due to a problem with our Pack ordering, but rather due to the Cub Scout organization), I'd like to get the Webelos badges ordered as soon as possible. If you plan on completing Fitness and Health requirements prior to the May meeting (set out in a recent email), could you please let me know by April 7th? You don't have to complete it by April 7th, just let me know that you intend to. This way we can order the badges so that the scouts can receive them this year. If you know earlier, the sooner we know, the sooner we can place the order.
Update
March 31st Meeting
Today we worked on two of the requirements for our Outdoorsman badge. We did a three mile hike (Allen and Adam had to cut it short), as well as a conservation project in the form of picking up some trash.
Outdoorsman Pin
For those who attended the camp out, they are very close to earning the Outdoorsman pin. Jacob, John, Johnny and Benjamin have only one more requirement to do. Adam has two more (he didn't cook at the camp out). At the next meeting, I plan on doing the one whipping and fusing a rope. After that, they will be ready for the pin. Adam will as well if he just completes one additional one.
Webelos Badge - IMPORTANT!
As far as the Webelos badge, its not too late to get it done this year. We've done a lot of the tasks in the meetings. Jacob and Johnny have earned and received theirs already. I'm almost certain that Adam has his completed and should receive it at the next meeting (am I remember this right Dieter?) Do I need to put in a request Dieter?
That leaves Benjamin, John and Allen. We've done the bulk of the work already. Here is what they need to finish, and its something we cannot really do in the the meetings.
Religious Faith Requirement (requirement 8, p. 50)
Okay, maybe David should not read this, but I considering that everyone has completed this, unless you specifically tell me otherwise. I am not requesting you to tell me otherwise. We have people of a lot of different faiths in our group. Let's just leave it at that.
Fitness & Health Requirement (p. 245)
We've actually done some of this in our meetings. Here is what is left.
Requirements 5, 6 and 7. Just talk to the scouts about drug, alcohol and tobacco use. We talked about it in the meeting, they just have to discuss it with a parent or family member. It doesn't have to be a grand or detailed discussion.
Requirements 2, 3 and 8. Pick 2 of these and do them with the scout. 2 and 8 reference some outside material, but I found it online with Google.
All told, there is really only a few hours of work left at most. It would be great if we could get this done before the May meeting so they could receive the badge. That means it probably needs to be done in the next two weeks or so.
Readyman Pin
Jacob, Adam, John and Johnny should also receive their Readyman pin soon. Benjamin and Allen missed one meeting. I marked in Benjamin's book what he needs to complete to earn the pin. If Allen wants to bring his book, I'll be happy to mark it.
Future Meetings
We will have our next meeting on April 21st. My thought is to have one more in May sometime because after we wrap up the Outdoorsman pin, I'm not sure if we will have time to complete anything else.
For the last meeting, I'm thinking May 12th, if that works. My thoughts are perhaps we could have something at a pool, and perhaps order pizza.
Thanks for all your support with the boys. Sorry the updates have been sporadic this year, but I think we got a fair bit done, and I hope the boys had fun.

Webelos Meeting Rescheduled to March 31st
Sorry for the late notice, but I'm going to reschedule our next meeting for March 31st. The holidays are starting, I think some people may be traveling, and it sounds like a few people have some other activities going on as well.
Meeting Wednesday
A few weeks back I had sent out an email saying that we were meeting this Wednesday. I've had several people ask me if we were still meeting, and I had said yes.
I was wondering how many people are going to be able to make it to the meeting. I had not planned on the fact that the kids were off on Thursday, and that some people may have other plans.

Day Camp March 13th & 14th
The Cub Scout Day camp is on March 13th and 14th at ISB. The Day Camp is a parent run event, and our den has been assigned to run the leather craft working station from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Saturday. Shirley and Kip have already volunteered to help with the station. We need one more volunteer. Is anyone else able to help.
The pack will provide the leather working materials, we just need parents there to help the kids.
Thanks in advance for everyone's help.
